Chevy Power Steering Pump

Chevy Power Steering Pump - Auto Repair

Your ability to control your Chevy depends to a large extent on its power steering system. If there are signs that this doesn’t work well, don’t postpone dealing with the problem by addressing it yourself or taking your vehicle to a car repair shop.

One of the most common signals that tells you something’s wrong with your Chevy’s power steering system is having a hard time turning the steering wheel. When this happens, you might be dealing with a pump problem.

The good news is that it’s not difficult to change a Chevy power steering pump if you’re not a complete stranger to car repair and if you know what to do. Here you can find the detailed instructions on how to replace your Chevy power steering pump. For now, let’s get a glimpse at what it involves in 3 simple steps.

Remove the Old Pump

1. Before you take out your Chevy power steering pump, have a good look at it to see how it is positioned and if the new pump looks similar.

2. First you need to loosen and remove the belt and the lines that are connected to the pump, then you can take the pump out. Of course, you need the right tools, including sockets, a ratchet, and an adjustable wrench.

Attach the New Pump

3. After pulling out the old power steering pump, put the new one in. Tighten the bolts using the right socket, and then replace the lines, the lower line first and then the top one.

4. Once you’ve done that, move to replacing the belt. Tighten it by pulling the pump away from the car engine.

Test Your New Pump

5. After completing all of these operations, add power steering fluid. Check whether there are leaks by starting the car.

6. With the engine on, turn the steering wheel all the way to the left, and then to the right.

7. Look again at the level of power steering fluid to see if there’s enough flowing through the power steering system. If the power steering pump is installed properly and you have enough fluid, your Chevy should be ready to roll.
